Comprehensive Verbal Communication Development

At Aspire Spectrum, our Verbal Communication program is dedicated to helping individuals find and amplify their voice. We focus on developing the ability to use spoken language to express needs, share ideas, and build social connections. Our approach is rooted in the principles of B.F. Skinner's analysis of Verbal Behavior, which treats language as learned behavior that can be systematically taught and reinforced.

Verbal communication is more than just speaking; it's about using language with purpose and intent. Our program is designed to move beyond simple labeling to foster genuine, spontaneous, and functional verbal communication. We work with learners at all stages, from those who are not yet speaking to those who need to refine their conversational skills.

The Foundation: Verbal Behavior Operants

We structure our teaching around the core verbal operants, ensuring a comprehensive approach to language development:

  • The Mand (Requesting): This is the most foundational verbal skill. We teach individuals that their words have power to get their needs and wants met. This is often the first operant we target, as it is naturally reinforcing and establishes the value of communication.
  • The Tact (Labeling): This involves teaching the names of objects, actions, and events in the environment. Tacting is essential for sharing experiences and commenting on the world.
  • The Echoic (Vocal Imitation): The ability to repeat sounds and words is a critical building block for learning to speak. We use systematic procedures to improve vocal imitation skills, which can then be used to teach other verbal operants.
  • The Intraverbal (Conversational Skills): This is the ability to respond to the language of others, such as answering questions or filling in the blanks in a song. Intraverbals are the foundation of social discourse and conversation.

Our Teaching Methodologies

We use a combination of structured and naturalistic teaching strategies to promote verbal communication:

  • Errorless Learning: We provide immediate prompts to ensure the learner responds correctly, then systematically fade these prompts as they become more independent. This builds confidence and reduces frustration.
  • Shaping: We reinforce successive approximations of a target sound or word, gradually shaping vocalizations into clear speech.
  • Natural Environment Teaching (NET): We capture and create learning opportunities within the child's natural environment, using their own motivation to teach language in context.
  • Intensive Teaching Trials: We use structured, fast-paced trials to provide many opportunities for practice and reinforcement in a short amount of time.

The Path to Conversation

Our ultimate goal is to help individuals become effective conversational partners. We build this skill systematically:

  1. Single-Word Responses: Answering simple questions with one word (e.g., "What do you see?" "A car.").
  2. Carrier Phrases and Sentences: Expanding to phrases and full sentences (e.g., "I see a car.").
  3. Multi-Turn Exchanges: Teaching the back-and-forth rhythm of conversation, including asking reciprocal questions.
  4. Complex Social Language: Working on skills like perspective-taking, understanding idioms, and maintaining topics.

Whether your child is just beginning their communication journey or needs help navigating the complexities of social language, our Verbal Communication program provides the individualized, evidence-based support they need to succeed. Contact us today to learn more.
